As in Wayang Kulit, we define the puppet as a source of energy continuously sending users into altered states of consciousness, breaking constraints, and boundaries of the material world. However, the word “puppet” frequently appears in the digital realm to indicate a form of Avatar, being mainly manifested as a representation of the materialism of real world. Deeply rooted in the Cartesian hierarchy of separation between subject and object, in the digital media culture a puppet is considered as something to be manipulated and controlled, ignoring its transformative relationship with the user. In the digital translation of puppetry, we are interested in how interactive technology will support ancient wisdoms of ritual, revealing transformative relationships of puppet and puppeteer, resulting in performances of great excitement, public engagement and reflection of the community, creating rich layers of mixed reality environments. In fact, Wayang Kulit offers complicated layers of mixed reality, which allows viewers to walk around the screen, watching the real puppet and its virtual form as a shadow at the same time. Mixed reality does not only happen in viewer/puppeteer’s consciousnessat the moment the shadow becomes alive with its own spirit, but also in the viewer’s perception struggling between real and virtual forms of presentation, walking around the screen. This kind of setting creates rich platforms for discussing reality, virtuality and mixed reality all together, which we adopt as our methodology in order to explore the full potential of virtual puppetry.

Reverse Shadow Theatre is an installation created with the Animata real-time animation editor.

Wayang Kulit is the indonesian shadow puppet theater, in which finely carved and painted leather puppets move behind a screen making the audiance see their shadows only. In our installation the situation is reversed. The role of the elaborate puppets is emphasized, while the visitor is a mere shadow trying to control the puppets by her movements.

Balinese Shadow Puppet + Virtual Interactive Puppet + Live Drawing and Storytelling)
Grace Street Theater , November 8 2007, Thursday 7 pm - Richmond VA USA
Puppeteer: I Gusti Putu Sudarta
Virtual Puppets and Interactive System: Semi Ryu and Stefano Faralli
Music: Andrew McGraw
Background flame : Christopher Romero

"Experimental Virtual Wayang" is a contemporary translation of the traditional Balinese (Indonesia) shadow puppet performance ("wayang kulit"), featuring virtual interactive puppets and a realtime background drawing system, bringing the sprit of live improvisation into storytelling.

This project explores two ideas of shadow; traditional shadows casted by wayang puppets, and digital shadows, projected images of virtual puppets projected one same screen. The shadow master will be able to simultaneously manipulate traditional puppets as well as virtual puppets which have been fitted with infrared units which will be monitored by a motion and position detection system. This system then communicates with a three-dimensional computer graphics system which will project virtual puppets onto the same screen used to display the traditional wayang puppets. He will be able to change the look of the virtual puppet and to control its movements based upon his own voice. This project opens the interactive system to public, inviting people to draw background images, interacting with puppeteer and musician, during the performance.

an interactive installation or an informative CD?

I want to do an interactive installation but I am afraid of my ability on technical part so I decide to do an Informative Interactive CD using Macromedia Flash for animation , 3D Max for modeling and Adobe Photoshop for picture manipulation.

The application will consist on all about wayang kulit. The history of wayang kulit, the characters, the gamelan music, the storyline, the process of making a wayang kulit, the dalang and all about wayang kulit itself.

The content that I will put on my application is not only the fact and general knowledge about wayang kulit, but I want to put an interactive slot that can let user play with the character of wayang kulit. An interaction that will let user enjoy with wayang kulit.

But I’m still thinking want to do an interactive installation.I research on software that provide motion detection.I found many software but I’m not decide yet which one that can fix my idea on my application.

Will look on it later.soon.Keep update.Keep update.dont stuck in the middle.

celcom broadband please be good,i’m doing my research now…;)

social behaviour among malaysian youth : lack of interest on malaysia traditional entertainment.

Lack of interest in wayang kulit among Malaysian youth. Malaysian youth nowadays are not interested anymore on traditional entertainment because of digital technology that provides more digital interactive entertainment. They had no interest to watch wayang kulit although that either unsure cultural Malay heritage which contains art values, education and entertaining. For them watch wayang kulit is a waste of time because their out of date showmanship ,boring and story-telling of old history. They are more interested in watching story on television or action stories in cinema theatres or only casually play video game which promises attractive special effects. This is because of influence of new media technology that provides more entertainment. They forgot about their culture and just follow the technology. Lack of interest in traditional entertainment because they think that who included with wayang kulit only group old folks only. They also unexposed with wayang kulit culture in their environment and innocents on puppet theatre because puppet theatre only bring to in tourism seasons only. They dislike atmosphere open air, noisy and congested with members of the public who come see the wayang kulit. They forced gathered mass because wayang kulit usually projected at a clearing whether field or hall. Different on the other hand for them who are looking wayang kulit show as a symbolic and rich presentation with its ulterior knowledge and arts behind statue gesture ,gamelan and story music delivered. As if this puppet theatre presentation with role as a from which media convey messages and lesson to society. Only the researcher who involve in wayang kulit will appreciate it.

Wayang Kulit

Topic:

Wayang Kulit.

Background:

Shadow play or shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images.

In Malaysia (Kelantan), shadow puppet plays are known as wayang kulit. In Malay, Wayang means shadow or imagination, while Kulit means skin and refers to the leather that puppets are made from. Stories presented are usually mythical & morality tales. There is an educational moral to the plays which usually portray a battle between Malay shadow plays are sometimes considered one of the earliest examples of animation.

Wayang “Virtual” was inspired by the tradition of storytelling using pictures in the Southeast Asian art form originally known as the shadow play.

The idea of the research project was an experimental attempt at combining traditional Wayang Kulit together media technology.

Problem Identification:

Lack of interest to watch wayang kulit.( traditional entertainment) because of influence of new media technology ( televison , media player, karaoke set, cinema )
