the wayang kulit ,
the history,
the making of puppet,
the charcters,
the musical instrument
and many more to exploring.
The things need to prepare
Technical Requirement:
Macromedia Flash for animating images
Adobe Illustrator for vectoring images
Adobe Photoshop for manipulation images
Project Output:
The output will be on CD ROM version.
Expected Findings:
- User will be able to experience a new kind of information delivered in a new interactive method.
- By comparing virtual wayang kulit and traditional wayang kulit, user will be able to participant actively in the story process and this making them understand the story, the characters and the play much better.
-User will be able to gain more knowledge about bthe uniqueness of the ancient of wayang kulit.
Erk..It's the time!

These are the basic instruments used in the shadow play performance.
This is some data of information that I collect.
I'll just highlight the interesting topic/part and play with the typography to make this information interesting to read.
There used to be four main varieties of the form in this country: the Wayang Kulit Siam of Kelantan; the Wayang Gedek, performed by the Thai communities of Kedah and Perlis; the Wayang Kulit Jawa, performed by the Javanese communities in Selangor and Johor; and the Wayang Kulit Melayu, performed by the Javanese communities of Terengganu. Today, only the first two are performed.
One man is responsible for breathing life into this array of characters: the master puppeteer and storyteller known as the Tok Dalang.
As a solo performer who representing all the heroes and heroines in the story, Dalang is the key of the performance - a masterly producer, conductor, puppeteer, historian, wise man, commedian, and the story-teller. Apart from this, Dalang also knows most of the music instruments meanwhile as the bomoh (Malay traditional practitioner). In the few hours of show, Dalang doesn’t only play the puppets, but also translates the voices of all the roles in the story apart from giving hints to the gamelan, sings and reads out loud. In some stories, the Dalang even uses ancient or classic dialect which in fact has long lost in the flow of time.
He will breath new life into each re-telling of those ancient tales, continually reaffirming the currency and relevance of the harmony of life, the balance between antagonist and protagonist, giving a little homour, making the whole performance alive. Beside the usual story line, some good Dalangs react things that happen the day or make a joke as to cheer the audience. Atmosphere and the emotion of the hall are controlled and manipulated by the Dalang in his rising and falling voice. Sometime when it comes to an excited point, the hall could be in a tumult while come to the sadness plot, you might hear the sound of sneezing or see weeping eyes.
To keep up with the times, today's Tok Dalangs do not only use the Kelantanese dialect but also mainstream Bahasa Malaysia, a few English words, the occasional Bollywood song, and even familiar tunes from TV serials to spice up their performance. The best thing is they always improvise as they perform, so audiences don't get a fixed dialogue or narration with every show."
Nice! Very details .
She vectoring wayang kulit. This is the concept what I'll do for my characters images design .

Wayang Kulit is the indonesian shadow puppet theater, in which finely carved and painted leather puppets move behind a screen making the audiance see their shadows only. In our installation the situation is reversed. The role of the elaborate puppets is emphasized, while the visitor is a mere shadow trying to control the puppets by her movements.

Balinese Shadow Puppet + Virtual Interactive Puppet + Live Drawing and Storytelling)
Grace Street Theater , November 8 2007, Thursday 7 pm - Richmond VA USA
Puppeteer: I Gusti Putu Sudarta
Virtual Puppets and Interactive System: Semi Ryu and Stefano Faralli
Music: Andrew McGraw
Background flame : Christopher Romero
"Experimental Virtual Wayang" is a contemporary translation of the traditional Balinese (Indonesia) shadow puppet performance ("wayang kulit"), featuring virtual interactive puppets and a realtime background drawing system, bringing the sprit of live improvisation into storytelling.
This project explores two ideas of shadow; traditional shadows casted by wayang puppets, and digital shadows, projected images of virtual puppets projected one same screen. The shadow master will be able to simultaneously manipulate traditional puppets as well as virtual puppets which have been fitted with infrared units which will be monitored by a motion and position detection system. This system then communicates with a three-dimensional computer graphics system which will project virtual puppets onto the same screen used to display the traditional wayang puppets. He will be able to change the look of the virtual puppet and to control its movements based upon his own voice. This project opens the interactive system to public, inviting people to draw background images, interacting with puppeteer and musician, during the performance.

I want to do an interactive installation but I am afraid of my ability on technical part so I decide to do an Informative Interactive CD using Macromedia Flash for animation , 3D Max for modeling and Adobe Photoshop for picture manipulation.
The application will consist on all about wayang kulit. The history of wayang kulit, the characters, the gamelan music, the storyline, the process of making a wayang kulit, the dalang and all about wayang kulit itself.
The content that I will put on my application is not only the fact and general knowledge about wayang kulit, but I want to put an interactive slot that can let user play with the character of wayang kulit. An interaction that will let user enjoy with wayang kulit.
But I’m still thinking want to do an interactive installation.I research on software that provide motion detection.I found many software but I’m not decide yet which one that can fix my idea on my application.
Will look on it later.soon.Keep update.Keep update.dont stuck in the middle.
celcom broadband please be good,i’m doing my research now…;)
social behaviour among malaysian youth : lack of interest on malaysia traditional entertainment.
Posted by atyyaWayang Kulit.
Background:
Shadow play or shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images.
In Malaysia (Kelantan), shadow puppet plays are known as wayang kulit. In Malay, Wayang means shadow or imagination, while Kulit means skin and refers to the leather that puppets are made from. Stories presented are usually mythical & morality tales. There is an educational moral to the plays which usually portray a battle between Malay shadow plays are sometimes considered one of the earliest examples of animation.
Wayang “Virtual” was inspired by the tradition of storytelling using pictures in the Southeast Asian art form originally known as the shadow play.
The idea of the research project was an experimental attempt at combining traditional Wayang Kulit together media technology.
Problem Identification:
Lack of interest to watch wayang kulit.( traditional entertainment) because of influence of new media technology ( televison , media player, karaoke set, cinema )
Forgotten about their culture, only people who do research on culture will appreciate it.
Aim and objective:
To research new approaches on interactive design.
To ensure the cultural ancestors of our era is not swallowed
To promote the shadow play for young generation.
To approach design principal in this concept.
